Jean Elizabeth Short 1921-2008
Jean Elizabeth Short, 87, died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Mitchell Care Center in Mitchell, Neb.
She was born Feb. 5,1921, in Shelton, Neb., to James Maxwell and Margaret (Hilderman) Smylie. The family moved to Colorado, where her parents homesteaded on Three Forks near Slater. She attended grade school there. The family later moved to Virginia Dale, Colo. She attended high school in Fort Collins, Colo., and attended CSU.
She married Elmer Short in 1940. They ranched near Livermore, Colo., and Greeley, Colo., before buying a ranch in the Harmony area west of Laramie in 1948. In the mid 1960s, they sold the ranch at Harmony and bought a ranch at Savery. Following his death in 1977, she sold the ranch and moved to Baggs.
While at Harmony, she was a 4-H leader, a member of the Harmony Home and Community Club, Farm Bureau and Cow-Belles. She was also active in the Harmony Church and Bible Study. In Baggs, she was an EMT on the Little Snake River ambulance. She enjoyed all of the activities associated with ranching and was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; her parents; and a brother, Dr. James Smylie.
She is survived by two daughters, Martha Page of Mitchell and Saundra Robbins and her husband, Dale of Medicine Bow; grandchildren, Craig Robbins and his wife, Paula, Clark Robbins and friend, Michelle Gaines of Laramie, Cherie Wagner and her husband, Tim of Spokane, Wash., Ty Kaisler and his wife, Becky of Falcon, Mo., Todd Kaisler and his wife, Darcy of Savery, and Trevor Kaisler and his wife, Linda of Savery; great-grandchildren, Will Robbins and his wife, Laura, Jack, Dakota and Sierra Robbins, Audrey and Ethan Wagner, Grant, Blake, Taylor, Slater, Coy and Destre Kaisler; brothers, Frank Smylie and his wife, Pat of Wellington, Colo., Dr. Don Smylie and his wife, Susan of Douglas; a sister, Katherine Moore of Wheatland; and numerous nephews and nieces.
At her request, there will be no services. Burial will be in the Reader Cemetery in Savery.
